Sunday, July 5, 2009

Due to the long days and driving time involved, I was not able to get this note to you last week. But we had a good week at the GARBC Annual Conference in Elyria, Ohio. My workshop went well, Beth's singing and judging in the "Talents for Christ" went well, and it was a special time last Friday when Dennis and Barb McMichael were presented the "Outstanding Christian Service Award" from national representative John Greening. It is always nice to see friends that you may only see once or twice a year at things like this. And it was also special for Beth and me to see our former church, First Baptist of Cincinnatus, New York represented by student Ben Hicks in the preaching division of the TFC. We appreciated the time to attend and minister at this conference. Next year it will be held in Arlington Heights, Illinois.

Right after this conference we returned to go directly into our Vacation Bible School week each evening. Though we were tired, we were blest by seeing all the kids involved in the "Polar Extremes" theme. They learned the truths of their Bible lessons well and had fun while doing it. Thank you to all our teachers, helpers, and anyone involved in making it happen.

For this holiday weekend we have our regular services on Sunday morning. Classes and Adult Bible Fellowships will meet at 9:30 AM, and if you have not attended this time recently please give it a try. It is great for kids and adults alike. Then at 10:45 AM our morning worship service will feature a good mix of songs to the Lord as well as a message from portions of Deuteronomy 8 & 9 as we consider the "Danger of Presumption About God's Grace on Our Nation." God is good to us and we must always be aware of taking His good grace on us for granted. This reminder by way of Israel's history will be timely for us this weekend.

July is shaping up to have a missions emphasis. We were just contacted by a desperate youth pastor from a church in Minnesota looking for a place for his 20 teens and 4 adults to stay overnight on their way to and from a ministry trip to New York City. They will be here the next two weekends with their ministry in between. The place they had lined up fell through at the last minute, and even though we don't know them, we are glad to offer our floor (and pew) space to "crash" as he calls it. Just wanted you to be aware of this.

Then on July 12 we will host a small team from Baptist Mid Missions as they prepare their recent candidates for missions service. They will minister in our ABF's, combined high school and college ages, our morning service, and children's church. Then we will enjoy a time of fellowship with them at our all church dinner right after the service, please plan to bring your items and stay for this good time.

That morning will also involve a Commissioning of our Japan Missions Team who will minister from July 16 - 29. They are "raring" to go, prepared and "pumped" for it. Dennis and Barb have prepared them well for this ministry and we look forward to the things God will do through them and teach to them about His work. Please remember that any of the supplies you signed up to bring are needed no later than Sunday, July 12 so that all can be packed well. And if you have not signed on to follow the progress of the group, I think you can do it at: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/group.php?gid=205520380439&ref=nf If that doesn't work for you, contact Dennis and he can work it out with you. The team has reached 100% of their support, for which we greatly praise the Lord! $14,000 is not easy to raise in this tough economy, but it shows the heart of not only our church but many interested and invested friends - thank you!

Once this group leaves for Japan things will "quiet down" a bit as far as activity goes on the homefront. Our Sunday bulletins and this note will probably be kind of "slim" as we settle into the summer weeks ahead. Many will be on vacation at various times, so your presence in our services when you ARE home and not on vacation will be needed and appreciated. And please remember you can send or drop off your regular giving at any time. As you know, our financial obligations NEVER take a vacation!!

Don't forget that our "Summer Small Groups" will begin this coming week. This Sunday at 5:00 PM the group led by Ron and Chris Sterner will meet at the church. Then on Tuesday, July 7 the group led by Beth and me will meet at 7:00 PM at our home. The group led by Bill and Debbie Mace will have their first meeting on Sunday, July 12 at 5:00 PM at Joe and Nancy Jordan's home. If you signed up to attend a group (and about 75% of our available adult members and attenders did) then you should be contacted by one of the leaders. In the event you did not get contacted or didn't sign up and want to attend, please see one of the leaders mentioned above. Since food is involved in each group, please RSVP the leaders so that they can plan accordingly for you. Each meeting will last about an hour to an hour and a half, maybe longer if supper and games are involved. And please note that these groups replace our regular Sunday evening service and ministries at the church for the summer.

Remember that our regular prayer and Bible times on Wednesdays at 7:00 PM and Thursdays at 11:00 AM will continue through the summer as usual. These are important times, don't miss them.

I think that is all for this week. Have a safe time at your gatherings this weekend and remember to always represent Christ well!

Pastor Don Workman
